Borobudur Temple Tickets, Hours and Climbing Rules

Which Borobudur ticket lets you climb the temple, what it includes, when to arrive, and how the sunrise program works, based on the operator's own...

Indonesia Destinations

Sebaraya Travel – The official booking page lists the Borobudur temple-climb ticket at Rp150,000, valid daily from 08.30 to 17.00 WIB, as of 25 October 2026. That ticket is the one that takes you up the stone terraces, not just around the park.

This guide covers the ticket types sold through the official channel, what each one includes, and the rules that apply on the monument. Foreign-visitor rates can differ from the figure above, so confirm the price shown at checkout before you pay.

Two Tickets, Two Experiences

Borobudur now sells two kinds of entry: a Pelataran ticket for the grounds around the temple, and a Candi ticket that lets you climb the structure itself. Pick based on whether you want to walk the terraces or only see the monument from below.

The Pelataran ticket is listed for domestic visitors only, and the grounds open from 06.30 to 16.30 WIB. For most international travellers, that makes the climb ticket the practical choice.

What the Climb Ticket Includes

The climb ticket bundles four things: access to the temple structure, a wristband ticket, a pair of upanat sandals, and a tour guide. The sandals are not a souvenir you can skip; they are part of how visits are run.

Upanat are woven sandals that visitors wear on the monument to reduce wear on the stone, according to InJourney, the state company that manages the site. The guide also controls how groups move across the terraces.

Climbs run every day, including Mondays. Until recently, general visitors could climb only from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays reserved for students.

How to Book and When to Arrive

Book through the official ticketing site at ticket.injourneydestination.id, which is run by the company that manages Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko. Buying there means you deal directly with the operator and see the current price for your date.

The booking page asks visitors to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before their slot, because late arrivals may lose access when the site is busy. For example, you book a 10.00 slot and leave Yogyakarta at 09.15: you will likely miss it.

Borobudur sits about 40 km northwest of Yogyakarta, in the Kedu Valley of Central Java. Allow for road traffic on weekends and Indonesian public holidays.

The Sunrise Program

The Borobudur Sunrise program costs Rp1,000,000 for both foreign and domestic visitors, with a cap of 100 people a day. It was reactivated in October 2025 on a trial basis after being suspended in 2020.

Guests check in at 04.00 WIB and enter through Gate 7, then watch the sunrise from the upper level around 05.00. The fee covers a guide, upanat sandals, a flashlight, a wristband, and a breakfast voucher.

Because it is a trial, the schedule can change. InJourney says it will review the program before setting a regular timetable.

What You Are Climbing

Borobudur was built in the 8th and 9th centuries under the Syailendra dynasty, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1991. The listing covers Borobudur plus two smaller temples, Mendut and Pawon, which stand on a straight line to the east.

The monument rises from a square base with five terraces to three circular platforms and a large central stupa. On those platforms sit 72 openwork stupas, each holding a statue of the Buddha.

Is a climb worth Rp150,000 if you only have half a day? I would say yes for a first visit, because the upper platforms are where the stupas are, and the grounds ticket is not sold to international visitors anyway.

Rules on the Monument

Treat Borobudur as an active Buddhist site and a protected structure, not a playground. Wear the issued sandals for the whole climb and follow the guide’s route.

Management limits how many people walk the structure at a time to protect fragile areas. If your slot is full, choose another day instead of looking for unofficial access.

For questions, the official contact numbers are listed on the InJourney Destination site. Check the booking page again the week you travel, since prices and slots are set by the operator.

Before you book anything else in Central Java, lock in your Borobudur slot first; it is the piece of the trip with a fixed capacity.

Ticket prices, fares, opening hours, and schedules can change at any time. Check the official operator or management channel before you travel.
