Sebaraya Travel – Order gudeg for the first time and the plate may look like a savoury curry, then taste closer to a sweet braise. That sweetness comes from palm sugar and coconut milk, simmered for hours with young jackfruit.
This guide explains what gudeg is, the difference between wet and dry versions, what comes on the side, and the two Yogyakarta areas most associated with it. It draws on Indonesia’s official tourism site, checked on 25 October 2026.
Young Jackfruit, Cooked Slowly
Gudeg is made from young, unripe jackfruit, known locally as gori. The shredded fruit is simmered with palm sugar, coconut milk, garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal, bay leaves and teak leaves.

The cooking takes several hours over low heat, and a good batch can take nearly a full day. Cooks traditionally prefer an earthen pot over wood or charcoal.
The reddish-brown colour comes partly from the teak leaves. That is why gudeg from Solo, which generally skips teak leaves, looks paler.
Wet or Dry: Which to Choose
Wet gudeg has more coconut-milk sauce, close to a gravy. Dry gudeg cooks longer with the coconut milk drained off, so it turns deep brown, caramelised and sweeter.
Dry gudeg also keeps longer, up to 24 hours refrigerated, according to the official tourism site. If you want to take some back to your hotel for later, dry is the safer pick.
There is also gudeg manggar, made with coconut flower instead of jackfruit. Look for the word “manggar” on the menu if you want to try it.
What Comes on the Side
Gudeg is served with rice and a set of side dishes. The usual ones are listed below.
| Side dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Sambel goreng krecek | Crisp beef skin fried with chilli and peanuts |
| Opor ayam | Chicken in a coconut-milk curry |
| Telur pindang | Seasoned boiled egg |
| Tahu or tempe bacem | Sweet braised tofu or soybean cake |
The krecek is the spicy element that balances the sweet jackfruit. If you find gudeg too sweet on its own, eat it in the same mouthful as the krecek.
Where to Eat It in Yogyakarta
Wijilan, near the royal palace, has more than 17 gudeg restaurants and is about a 10-minute walk or a becak ride from the Kraton. That makes it easy to pair with a morning palace visit.

Barek, north of the city near Gadjah Mada University, has many restaurants and street-side tents. The official site also names Gudeg Yu Djum, Gudeg Yu Narni, Gudeg Bu Slamet, Gudeg Bu Ahmad and Gudeg Bu Tjitro.
A Note for First-Timers
Is gudeg a breakfast dish or a dinner dish? It is sold at different times by different sellers, so check opening hours on the day rather than assuming.
Prices are not published on the official site we used. Ask before ordering if the menu does not show them, especially when choosing extra side dishes.
If your Yogyakarta itinerary includes the palace, walk to Wijilan afterwards and make gudeg your lunch.
